The Tom Lehrer Song Book
Tom Lehrer, the iconic American satirist, mathematician, and singer-songwriter, crafted a relatively small but highly influential body of work in the 1950s and 60s, characterized by its sharp wit, dark humor, and clever lyrical acrobatics.
His songs, often accompanied by his simple piano melodies, tackled sensitive and controversial topics of the era, from nuclear proliferation (“We Will All Go Together When We Go”) and environmental pollution (“Pollution”) to academic life (“Lobachevsky”) and the absurdities of society (“Poisoning Pigeons in the Park”).
In a remarkable and generous move, Lehrer declared in 2020 that he was releasing all of his lyrics, and later in 2022, all of his music and recordings, into the public domain. This extraordinary decision, formalized through the Tom Lehrer Trust, means that anyone is free to use, perform, record, or adapt his works without seeking permission or paying royalties, ensuring his satirical genius remains accessible and can continue to inspire and entertain for generations to come.
